About Us

Mansfield Mediation was formed in 1994. The organisation gained Limited status in August 2000 and became independent. The organisation offers mediation services as an alternative dispute resolution mechanism to law and the courts. Since the early 1990’s, there has been swift growth in the use of mediation in Britain, resolving conflict in ever new areas of dispute. Mediation UK is our accrediting body.

Aims

The aims of Mansfield Mediation are to work with communities to reduce low level conflict and to educate and train people in effective methods of conflict resolution.

Mediation

Our core business is in neighbour mediation. Neighbour mediation is mostly a free service for those going through the process which can often resolve real problems. The types of issues that create conflict for neighbours include: loud music, banging doors, late night d.i.y, children, boundaries, parking, dogs and other environmental issues.

Other areas of mediation where we are able to provide services include: family (helping to prevent homelessness), community (several party involvement), landlord and tenant (where tenants may be at risk of eviction), and also workplace (disputes in the workplace). Mediation is about giving an equal voice to those in conflict.

Mediation is a well-established process that seeks to resolve disagreements in which an impartial third party ( the mediator) assists parties in a dispute to find a solution to the issues raised.  Mediation is a voluntary process, both parties agree to take part. Parties are brought together in mutual consent through the support of a mediator, to become reconciled or to amicably resolve their differences. Mediation is most often delivered through an independent organisation.

Mediation is:

  • confidential
  • impartial (facilitated by an impartial third party)
  • non judgemental
  • informal
  • future-focused
  • able to deal with a number of issues and seeks to find the root causes
  • taking a step by step approach

Mediation seeks to:

  • resolve conflict
  • find solutions to meet the needs of all
  • create a win-win solution for individuals
  • create realistic agreement
  • treat all parties with fairness
  • understand other peoples worries, problems and issues
  • resolve power imbalances

Mediation is suitable for a wide number of problems. Mediation is most successful when used early and before real dispute is apparent, this early intervention will often prevent situations from becoming much more difficult for all parties.

Training

Conflict resolution has been identified as a need in training for young people and adults. Because of the nature of our work, we believe that help for e.g. with assertiveness and handling aggression is needed by some of us individuals within the community. We have sought to make this course and others a free service for adults where this type of training may be helpful. In partnership with Nottinghamshire County Council and the Adult Community Learning Service through the Learning and Skills Council, courses have been designed which seek to make available a set of skills and learning for every day life. There is full eligibility for these courses in Nottinghamshire.
